Is the “Us” in Genesis the Trinity?

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…

– Genesis 1:26

From the beginning, God said, “Let there be light … Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water … Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear … Let the land produce vegetation … Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night … Let the water teem with living creatures…”

But on the day God created mankind, God did not say, “Let there be mankind.” Instead, God was very specific to say, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…”

In the original Hebrew text, the word “Elohim,” which is the plural word for “Gods,” is used in Genesis to describe when God made mankind. Many biblicists and Christian theologians still see this as a mystery.

So who is the “us” in Genesis? If you’ve seen another one of my posts, there are people who believe that the “us” refers to God and the angels. But that’s clearly impossible. Others claim that it refers to the Holy Trinity. Well does it?

Who is Female in the Trinity?

For those who believe that the “us” refers to the Holy Trinity, let me ask you a question. Who among the Trinity is the female image? The Trinity is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, and all three are referred to as male in the Bible. But when God created mankind in God’s image, what was the outcome?

Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Out of God’s image came out male and female. Therefore, the “us” cannot refer to the Trinity because the Trinity is male.

A Trinity Image Would Create Three Images of Mankind

If it were true that the “us” refers to the Trinity, then three images of mankind should’ve been created – one image for each one of the three images in the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But only two images came out – male and female. Therefore, the “us” cannot refer to the trinity.

Trinity is Not Plural

And if you’re not convinced yet. The Trinity itself is not even plural. Again, those who insist that the “us” refers to the Trinity show their poor understanding of the Scriptures. Trinity means triune – three in one God. In other words, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are all the same one God.

Take for instance the transformation of H2O.

trinity; us in genesis; wmscog; ahnsahnghong

In its liquid state, H2O is called water. When H2O freezes, it becomes solid and is called ice. And when H2O boils, it evaporates and becomes gas. In none of these three different states does it lose its essence. Its chemical composition does not change. Though the form and name change, it remains H2O. It is the same with God.

The Trinity Is the Male Image of God

God the Father and God the Son are the same one God. In the Old Testament, God the Father Jehovah prophesied that He would come to the earth in the flesh. He would be born as a son, as a child.

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace … The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

In the time of Isaiah, God the Father said that in the future, a child, a son would be born with the title of Mighty God. Through this, God the Father Jehovah was letting us know that He would come in the role of the Son to this earth.

Jesus Christ is God the Father Jehovah who was born on this earth in the flesh.

Philippians 2:5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God … Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.

Jesus Christ is God the Father who came to the earth as a human being in the role of a son. And there are many more verses in the Bible and prophecies to prove this.

Jesus Christ the Son is also the Holy Spirit.

John 14:26 But the Father sends the Advocate as my representative – that is, the Holy Spirit – he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

1 John 2:1 … But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.

The Advocate – the Holy Spirit – is Jesus Christ.

Again, there are many more prophecies in the Bible that prove God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are one and the same God. Because they are one and the same, they are one. In other words, they are not plural and cannot be what the “us” in Genesis refers to. No matter what angle we look at it from, the “us” in Genesis is not the trinity. The “us” in Genesis refers to God the Father and God the Mother. That is why two images came out reflecting the image of god – male and female.

I would greatly encourage you to visit your local World Mission Society Church of God to do a more in-depth study about the Trinity to better understand why the “us” in Genesis is not the trinity. And to see why it the “us” refers to God the Father and God the Mother, who is testified from the beginning to the end of the Bible.

Obviously it couldn’t be the trinity because male AND FEMALE came out of God’s image. Love this post!

LOL! The image cracks me up. Three does NOT equal two. Very clear explanation about the Trinity. The transformation of H20 makes so much sense!

Great post! It’s clear the “us” In Genesis 1:26 can’t be the trinity because Jehovah, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are all male according to the verses of the bible.

I also love how God allowed the answer to the mystery of “us” in verse 26 to be answered in the very next verse(Gen1:27)! Because the ones made in the image of God are male and female then logically there must be both a male and female God who created them.
