Remembering the 2010 Haiti Earthquake

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook the small nation of Haiti, about 16 miles outside of its capital Port-au-Prince.

Many call it one of the worst natural disasters of modern times, claiming approximately 300,000 lives and destroying hundreds of thousands of homes, businesses, schools and government buildings. And to make matters worse, unsanitary conditions later threatened even more lives due to a cholera outbreak just a few months after the earthquake.

A call to action immediately took place and organizations around the world mobilized to come to the rescue of the Haitian people, including the World Mission Society Church of God.

The Messiah Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea, hosted a series of special charity concerts in Busan. The performances raised $100,000 (USD) in just two evenings. General Pastor Kim Joo-cheol of the Church of God flew from South Korea to New York City to personally deliver the donation to the Central Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) at the United Nations Headquarters.

General Pastor Kim Joo-cheol delivered the message of love saying, “The only thing that can heal the dry and dreary world is the love of a mother who sacrifices herself unconditionally. As we believe in God the Mother, we want to help our neighbors with the heart of Mother, the greatest love of all.”

Amir Dossal, former executive director of the United Nations Office of Partnerships said that they “saw potentiality that the world can change if the Church of God that delivers Mother’s love will take the lead.” They hoped to continue working together on such relief works.

The UN later announced on its website that this was “the largest donation made by a faith-based organization to the [UN Central Emergency Relief Fund] in history.”

One of the teachings of Christ is to be the salt and light of the world. And just as the World Mission Society Church of God fulfills other biblical prophecies, members also try their best to fulfill this Scripture through their good deeds.

On the fifth anniversary of this tragic event, the world remembers the painful suffering of the people of Haiti. I personally would also like to remember them, knowing that the world can be saved through the love of Heavenly Mother. Although many people claim the Church of God is a “dangerous cult,” I am a witness that members try their hardest everyday to follow the example of Christ Ahnsahnghong and Heavenly Mother in delivering love and happiness to all people of the world.

Just as General Pastor Kim Joo-cheol mentioned during his visit to the UN, “We hope that we can help the whole world with Mother’s water of life and love like the Good Samaritan.”
